Big Wins for the Bulldogs

Laila Johnson Scores Her 1,000th Point

It's been a good week for the Holmes varsity basketball teams so far.

The Lady Bulldogs started their season with a win by beating Boone County Monday night 73-53. It was a big night for the four seniors. Laila Johnson had a double-double with 29 points and 12 rebounds. Tyrah Englemon scored 15 points and Megan Beckett scored 14. Latavia Kieth had 10 rebounds.

Tuesday night saw the opening of the basketball season for the boys' team. It was not pretty, but in the end the Bulldogs prevailed 46-45 over Highlands.

The dogs struggled shooting the ball as they shot a dismal 26% from the floor going 11-41 from the 2 and 5-19 from the 3. The Bulldogs had an early lead 8-7 but fell behind 26-16 at the half. After the break, the defense got very stingy only giving up 19 second-half points. Meanwhile, Donavin Saxon came alive and dominated the 3rd quarter scoring 6 points and grabbing 6 rebounds as he ignited the Bulldogs with his play. Kerez Race and Trey Gaithers caught fire and led the 4th quarter charge. With under 40 seconds to go, Raavai Commodore aggressively pursued a missed shot and stuck it back in to tie the game at 45. Highlands held the ball and a player was fouled with 7.5 seconds to go. Fortunately for Holmes, he missed both free throws. A quick outlet pass was made to Tico Pouncy, and he immediately drove coast to coast, missing the layup, but was fouled with less than one second left. Highlands tried to ice him by calling a timeout, but the junior calmly went to the line and swished the first one to give the Dogs the lead for the first time in the second half. After missing the second shot on purpose, Highlands' 80 foot desperation shot hit the ceiling and victory was secured.

Saxson led the Bulldogs with 12 points and 10 rebounds, followed by Ke'Rez Race with 11 points and 7 rebounds.

On Wednesday, the Lady Bulldogs beat Ludlow in a memorable game as senior Laila Johnson scored her 1,000th point.

The Lady Bulldogs beat the Lady Panthers 76-30 in front of a large home crowd. Senior Tyrah Englemon led the way with 25 points, 10 rebounds, and 8 assists. Kamari Graham added 16 points with 7 steals, followed by Johnson's 14 points, 14 rebounds, and 8 assists. Deara Stowers scored 9 points and had 4 steals.

The Bulldogs will travel to North College Hill on Friday and the Lady Bulldogs are back in action Monday against Mason County at Holmes. The JV games will begin at 6 p.m. followed by varsity at 7:30. Go Bulldogs!
