Covington Education Foundation names Spike Jones "Person of the Year"

Kenton County Police Chief Col. Michael "Spike" Jones has been selected as the Covington Education Foundation’s 2016 Person of the Year.

The foundation, which awards college scholarships to students at Holmes High School and program support for Covington Independent Public Schools, will honor Jones at a luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Wednesday, June 8, 2016 at the Dress Pavilion in Covington’s Devou Park.

Jones was selected for his leadership service and dedication to the youth in the city of Covington. Jones, a lifelong Covingtonian, is a proud graduate of Holmes, where he excelled as a drummer in the school band and was Drum Major in his senior year. He holds degrees from Eastern Kentucky University and Northern Kentucky University.

He served two terms as President of the Kentucky State Fraternal Order of Police, which represents more than 9,800 sworn law enforcement officers. He worked for 27 years with the Covington Police Department, rising to Chief, and retiring in 2015. He has distinguished himself as an extraordinary and respected community leader, working with an array of neighborhood groups and organizations.

“We are so honored to pay tribute to such an outstanding man,’’ said Chuck Eilerman, president of the foundation.  “Spike makes our community a much better place to live.’’

Cost for the luncheon is $55 per person. For more information or to make a reservation please call Janice Krumwiede, 859-392-3182. For a sponsorship form, click here.

The Covington Education Foundation is a 501 C (3) charitable organization, established in 1999. Since then, it has awarded $79,000 in college sponsorships and fees; provided $35,000 in support of mentoring programs, and contributed $7,000 to youth leadership initiatives.
