Covington Schools COVID-19 Communications

COVID-19

April 6, 2021

A Message from Superintendent Garrison:

Alvin Garrison

I am pleased to announce that students in Covington Independent Public Schools will have the opportunity to attend school four days a week when they return from Spring Break.

Beginning April 19, 2021, all students in grades K-12 now enrolled in the hybrid learning model will attend in-person classes Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.  All students will continue to learn remotely on Wednesdays. In addition, a virtual option remains available for families who desire to stay in the Covington Virtual Academy.  However, if you wish for your child to attend in-person, four days a week, please contact your child’s school as soon as possible.

I most certainly thank our students, parents, teachers and staff who have supported our efforts during this COVID-19 pandemic. The well-being of our students and staff has, and will always be, our top priority. Over the past year, the district has adjusted its approach to combating COVID-19 as conditions have improved. This includes having all students attend remotely, to the district’s phased-in approach of some students attending two days a week to some grades, K, 1,2, 6, 12, attending four days a week to now giving all grades the option of attending school in-person four days a week. The latest option is being offered as the number of positive COVID-19 cases is decreasing in the area, and new guidance from the Centers for Disease Control that recommends at least 3 feet, instead of 6 feet of physical distancing in classroom settings.

Covington Schools is prepared to welcome students back to a safe and clean learning environment. However, if conditions change, we may have to adjust again.  We all need to do our part to keep our schools open.  To support in-person learning, students should adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Wear a mask/face covering on the bus and during the school day
  • Practice physical distancing and frequent handwashing
  • Cover coughs and sneezes
  • Remain at home when sick

We are excited about having more students in our school buildings.  Until then, please enjoy a safe Spring Break and we hope to see your child on April 19.

Warm Regards,

Alvin L, Garrison,
Superintendent
