Covington students to begin remote learning on September 1

Covington Independent Public Schools will follow Gov. Andy Beshear’s recommendation to delay the start of in-person classes until September 28.  The district’s first day of school remains the same - September 1.  All students will begin with remote learning.

Beshear made his recommendation Monday. The governor made his decision based upon four factors:

  • Increases in total cases and the positivity rate, including the apex of cases in Kentucky likely to be here now and/or in September;
  • Children are getting the virus at an increasing rate and can spread the virus to adults, with unknown long-term impact upon the children;
  • The experiences in other states – such as Indiana and Georgia – that have returned prematurely to in-person classes. This has resulted in hundreds of students/teachers in quarantine in those states; and
  • Kentucky residents are not heeding travel warnings and continue to travel to “hot spot” zones on the coast, thus increasing community spread in Kentucky.

The district will soon communicate details related to schedules, laptops, assignments and meals.  We most certainly thank you for your patience and we look forward to a great school year.
