Remote Option for Parents Not Comfortable With Sending Children to School

Letter About Remote Learning

As Covington Independent Public Schools returns to some form of in-person instruction, we understand that not all families will want to send their children to school. Based on your feedback from our surveys this summer, we learned that approximately 30% of our families would choose a remote option for their children. We understand that parents may choose this option for many reasons, such as students or other family members having a chronic medical condition, remote learning providing more flexibility to students and families, and the ongoing concerns of exposure to COVID-19. If you are interested in the remote option for your child(ren) you will need to complete the enclosed application by August 7 and return to your home school or central office. Applications will also be available at your home school, our district enrollment center and our central office location. You can also fill out the remote application and submit online by visiting our district website. You will find the link ‘remote application’ under the tab COVID-19 on our home page.

While specific details of this fully remote program are still being finalized, here are a few facts and guidelines that can help guide your thinking as you consider the decision to sign your child up for this program:

· Students in this remote program will remain Covington Independent students but attend school full-time remotely.

· Each student in grades K-12 can receive a district-owned electronic device for their use if needed from their school. Parents will need to pick up the device and sign a release form to take the computer home.

· The content of the classes in the remote program will be purchased by the district through a vendor and will align with the Kentucky Academic Standards from the Kentucky Department of Education.

· When possible, designated Covington teachers and staff will be assigned exclusively to the program to guide and support learning.

· Most learning would take place asynchronously, which means students can engage in their learning using a schedule that works best for their family. For example, a teacher would not regularly expect students to attend "live" lessons at certain times. Instead, teachers may offer mini-lessons, make pre-recorded videos, hold office hours, and provide other “live” support when the students need it.

· In the remote program, your child may not receive instruction or support from their home school teacher. Our classroom teachers will be focusing on in-person instruction. Covington Schools may have other instructors assigned to remote students.

· Parents/caregivers will continue to be a key academic support for the student.

· Students must commit to participating in the remote program for 1 semester or 18 weeks at a time. The first semester takes us through Christmas break.

Like you as families, we as a district learned a lot this past spring during the extended school closure about remote learning. We have used our experience to develop a better and more consistent learning experience for our remote students.
