School Board Recognition

April Brockhoff

January is School Board Recognition Month, a time to celebrate and thank board members for the countless hours they spend working to provide the best possible education for our students. We most certainly appreciate members of the Covington Board of Education who not only serve as advocates for children but also for public schools.

“Though January is set aside for board recognition month, we know that our board members work hard all year,’’ said Superintendent Alvin Garrison. “They not only set the vision for the district, they also send their children and grandchildren to Covington schools and support students by attending their events. I cannot thank them enough for all that they do.’’

Each week, we will get to know Covington board members a little better as we highlight them through a series of questions.

April Brockhoff

Q. How many years have you served on the Covington Board of Education
A. Almost 4 years.

Q. Why did you run for school board?
A. I was appointed first. A friend asked me to consider applying to fill a vacated position. I was apprehensive at first, but after thinking on it, decided to go for it. I had been involved on SBDM council at Sixth District Elementary School and Holmes High School and had spent a lot of time volunteering in the school district. I see it as a way to help provide our students a great education.

Q. What is your favorite memory?
A. My favorite memories are going camping in Tennessee where my mom and her siblings grew up. When I was young, my family (aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents) would meet there every year for the 4th of July. One of my favorite parts was sitting around a campfire and listening to my mom, aunts, and uncles telling stories of all their adventures living in the mountains, and my uncles' stories of their time serving in the military. As all cousins got older, and had children of our own, we were able to continue this tradition for many years.

Q. What are some small things that make your day better?
A. Painting, babysitting

Q. What is the best way to start your day?
A. Hot cinnamon tea
