Covington to celebrate progress in community-wide initiative that promotes reading

Since Covington Independent Public Schools launched a free web based literacy program in December,  Covington children are reading and playing more games that help them improve their reading skills.

Covington children have read 139,190 books for a total of 37,739,348 words. They have logged 9,836 hours on the community-wide initiative -   footsteps2brilliance.

The district, private and parochial schools and day care centers throughout the Covington community will celebrate the progress that children are making on the program when it meets today, September 21, at 5 p.m. at the Life Learning Center, 20 W. 18th St., Covington.

“We are pleased with the numbers that we are seeing,’’ said Suzanne Thompson, elementary director of Covington Schools and coordinator of footsteps2brilliance for the district.  “But we want to make sure that as many Covington children as possible are taking advantage of this program.  That’s another reason we are meeting - we would like to engage businesses, churches and other organizations to help us spread the word to families about this wonderful program.  Our goal is for all Covington children to use this free app.’’

The district, along with the help from generous members of the community began footsteps2brilliance in December 2015.  The program delivers more than 1000 literacy games for children in preschool through third grade.  Children can use cell phones, computers, I pads and other devices to access the program. Studies show that children who use this program see immediate gains in vocabulary and critical thinking.  The program is free to families in Covington with children in preschool through third grade.
