Parents, staff, students, and community members believe Covington Independent Public Schools should use COVID-19 funds to meet the needs and provide activities for a range of children in the district.
Scott Alter, Assistant Superintendent for Instruction, said the district will do just that.
“The district will adhere to the wishes of our community,’’ Alter said. “We value their input and insights.’’
More than 600 parents, staff and students responded to the survey on how the district should use its ESSER III Funds from the American Rescue Plan Act, which provides supplemental funding, known as the ESSER III fund. School districts are required to reserve their allocations to address learning loss, afterschool activities, and summer learning programs. Covington received nearly $20 million from the funds. The district decided to gather input from its stakeholders before deciding how to spend the funds. Respondents replied to the survey earlier this summer.
The respondents said the district’s top priority should be to plan and implement activities addressing the needs of low-income students, students with disabilities, gifted and talented students, English learners, migrant students, students experiencing homelessness, and children in foster care.
Other priorities include providing high-quality, culturally responsive instructional resources for all schools and high-quality training for teachers to accelerate student learning, provide facility upgrades, provide wellness supports, social and emotional counseling and training, and provide activities related to extended summer learning, after school programs and tutoring.
