Winkler Awarded Professional of the Year

Deborah Winkler

Deborah Winkler, media specialist at Holmes Middle School, was recently selected as the 2020 Kentucky Education Association’s Education Support Professional of the Year. This award is given annually to a KEA member who exhibits excellence in areas such as professional practice, member advocacy and association involvement and community engagement.

The Covington Board of Education recognized Ms. Winkler for receiving this honor at its board meeting Thursday night.

“Deb Winkler exemplifies support through her countless hours and efforts on behalf of her students, school, district and profession,’’ said Covington Superintendent Alvin Garrison.

Ms. Winkler, a 1981 graduate of Holmes High School, serves as president of the Covington Education Association. She has worked in Covington Schools for 24 years at the middle and alternative schools. She also is the district’s swim coach.

Ms. Winkler said she was surprised, but honored by the award.

“I do love Covington Schools,’’ she said. “There is no way I could have done this without the help of everyone around me especially my fellow CEA members and my daughter.’’

As the KEA state winner, Ms. Winkler will be considered for the award sponsored by the National Education Association.

Jeanetta Kathman, principal of Holmes Middle School said Ms. Winkler is deserving of the recognition.

“She works hard and always thinks of our students and families first,’’ Mrs. Kathman said. “She has high expectations for our students and herself.  In addition to a great work ethic, she is always the first to volunteer when help is needed. Ms. Winkler is a true example of the motto:  'Once a Bulldog, Always a Bulldog'.”
