Students build machines to open umbrellas

Holmes High School students in Mr. Hall’s and Mrs. Wyatt’s Physical Science classes completed a mid-semester hands-on summative assessment by engineering Rube Goldberg machines.

A Rube Goldberg machine is a complicated contraption made to complete a simple task. For the past week in the Holmes Campus Library, students have been creating machines to open an umbrella. They were required to complete a blueprint, demonstrate at least 3 types of simple machines properly used, and demonstrate 2 or more energy transformations or conversions with a minimum of 4 different steps.

On Friday each group will present their machine and how it works to their classmates.

Students have experienced an exciting environment of learning in the library along with intense conversations concerning incline planes, potential energy, levers, pulleys, kinetic energy, design and Newton’s Law.

One student commented, “It’s live . . . I mean it's science but it's creative. We had to reverse engineer from the problem to a solution on our own."
