Students Get a Reality Check

Students Get a Reality Check

Freshmen at Holmes High School got a dose of reality today. Students were assigned a monthly salary based on their current grade point average. They were also assigned a random number of children of various ages.

The students had to budget their money and visit a variety of booths based on the real world. They had to pay taxes, insurance, utilities, and child care. They had to decide what type of housing and transportation best fit their income and family needs. They had to buy groceries, clothing, and health and beauty items. If they had enough money left over, they could donate to charities and go to a movie or even on a vacation. If they ran out of money, they had to get a second job or be placed on a payment plan.

Students learned a lot from the experience as one student stated, "Stuff is expensive!"

Many students were proud of their ability to cover all their expenses and still have money left for savings. One student said, "I am proud of my ability to budget my money and still have some left in the end." Another student, however, learned the hard way and said, "I'm going to be one broke person in Covington if I don't get my GPA up."

Volunteers from the high school, elementary schools, board of education, support services, and CITI helped the students navigate their way through the process and made sure all their bills were paid.
