Students, Superintendent Express Support for New Covington Summer Program

Board of Education

The Covington Board of Education reviewed a summer program known as Kings Leadership Program, which included eleven boys.

Rico Rice, of Rico Rice Consulting, explained the program has two main components that involve successful men from the community engaging the students, and another where students explain why their values are important.

The eleven students attended a class every day from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., proving their interest, Superintendent Alvin Garrison said. Rice said the boys learned to network, work as a team, study for the ACT, and how to keep up appearances.

Four of the students attended the board meeting and talked about what they learned, including dressing appropriately, helping people through Matthew 25 Ministries, improving ACT scores, and greeting people with a firm handshake and eye contact.

Board member Glenda Huff tested the theory by going over to the four students and introducing herself so she could see the eye contact and the firm handshakes.

"We want to grow the program, and give more young men support for the idea that they can do anything they put their minds to doing," said Garrison.
