Holmes names new basketball varsity head coach for Lady Bulldogs

Alissa Brown, Holmes basketball coach

Alissa Brown, who coached the Holmes Junior Varsity Girls basketball this past season, is now the head coach of the varsity Lady Bulldogs Basketball team.

“I am so excited and grateful that I have been given the opportunity to lead the Lady Bulldogs Basketball program,’’ Ms. Brown said.  “I am so fortunate to be able to teach and coach these young student-athletes on the Holmes Campus. The Holmes community has accepted me with open arms and I have been overwhelmed with the amount support I have received.’’

Ms. Brown has been playing and studying basketball ever since she can remember. She grew up in Iowa and played collegiate basketball at Kentucky State University. Then she competed in the NCAA tournament and on SIAC West conference championship team.  She also has coached at basketball camps for students in kindergarten to high school.  She recently became a USA Basketball certified Gold coach and will be coaching at a Nike Basketball camp this July where she will collaborate with elite coaches from all over the world.

Holmes Athletic Director Stan Steidel said Ms. Brown is an outstanding young coach who did an outstanding job last season. “We are pleased to have her step up and take a leadership role in our program,” he said.

Ms. Brown, who teaches physical education at Holmes Middle School, wanted the coaching position because she is passionate about the game and she wants to help build the basketball program.

“I believe that coaching at the high school level is the most direct and efficient way to guide young women to be leaders, be self-confident, build character, and create positive momentum that will carry them throughout the rest of their lives,’’ Ms. Brown said.

Ms. Brown also wants to implement a growth plan for the Lady Bulldogs basketball program that includes bridging the gaps between the varsity, middle and elementary school programs.
